My work in video explores the political, material and semantic dimensions of language and its role as the mediating liminal space between individual and collective, where language is understood as both verbal/ written/ text, and the shared codes of mass culture and the media environment.
My work takes a critical, but playful, stance towards living in a capitalist society, often examining the interaction between consumerism, self-actualisation and belief within it. Using found text from everyday sources- from book titles to corporate slogans to personal diaries- my work humorously engages with the idea of a socially constructed self and attempts to perform the identity of the net-worked subject.
One of the questions my work adresses is the difficulty of creating a language and a way of living that remains critical despite exisitng within the thoroughly mediated and coopting landscape of consumer culture. Positing the artist as simultaeously complict in and critical towards the capitalist system, my work attempts to find humour in these contradictions and the ambiguous subjectivity it creates.
The idea of a socially constructed subjectivity, inextricably linked to the codes of the info/entertainment industries and to the social media platforms which shape communcition, has lead me to research the nature of net-worked existence. Within this I am interested in the creation of virtual public space in the age of the internet, as well as the modes of communication, reception of artworks and dissemination of knowledge associated with it.
