High Street Romantic (2008)

2: 30 extarct from 28:30 work
Installation shot

This video is a long text made up of a collage the artist’s own diaries, romance novels, and letters found on internet forums which have been edited down to retain just the incidence of the word ‘love’. The resulting text was performed in fashion shops and department stores across London, using the commercial sphere as a film set complete with costumes and make-up.
The work performs the intersection between the public and the private, echoing the way that the distinction between the two is increasingly fluid in a culture of reality TV and Youtube. It also questions the rules of public space, which could be seen as being as much a cliché as the language spoken in the text.
