Linda Sandino is Senior Research Fellow at Camberwell College of Arts,
University of the Arts London, involved in developing an oral history archive, Voices in the Visual Arts [viva].
She has also undertaken recordings for the National Life Stories at The British Library National Sound
Archive She is editor of the Special Issue of the Journal of Design History  ‘Oral Histories and Design’ (2006).
She is currently embarked on a PhD at the Centre for Narrative Research at the University of East
London on identity in life history narratives of applied artists.
Drawing on this research, the presentation for the Soundings workshop explored how life histories
provide a discursive space that does not separate ‘individuality’ from the ‘social’; instead it is a site that
enables individuals to reflect on the network of associations that make up their sense of self and their world.
