Workshop 3: Glasgow
Placing Performance Histories

University of Glasgow Department of Theatre
18 June 2007
Curator: Dee Heddon

The Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies at the University of
Glasgow are hosting the workshop 'Placing (Oral) History'. Sensitive to the
politics of mapping and representing histories, this workshop will explore
issues of place as they relate to potential oral history methodologies.

Reference to place includes an awareness of local, national and cultural
specificities, whether of practices, genealogies, debates or issues of
access. Can places and cultures be represented in and through oral history?
What different types of oral history methodologies might engender the
production of a sense of place? Where should oral histories be placed, in
order to ensure access to them by a diversity of people?

Invited workshop participants include writer and broadcaster Billy Kay, arts
critics Joyce McMillan and Mary Brennan, arts programmer Neil Wallace, and
artists Minty Donald and David Harding.
